Mad Monte by flying-polock Mad Monte by flying-polock
Client's 1972 Monte Carlo project... The idea was to keep a very subtle look with the car, and add some touches that would almost look "factory", as well.
We opted to use as many off-the shelf parts as possible (trim, handles, etc), and then do some very subtle custom modifications as well, to tie in the classic personal luxury theme of the car.
As usual, Illustrator CS2, starting with pencil drafts. Hope you like it!

Oh, if one only could have one of the cars from your drawings... A man can dream, can't he?

This is great. Black, clean, mean.

I like this car heaps, especially the rendering on the bumpers. I can't seem to get my renderings to have realistic looking chrome bumpers. This car is really nice!!! great work

Thanks so much! I've been working at and reefining methods for creating chrome for years.... maybe I'll do a nifty little how-to?

Maybe you should, It'd be very good. Your chrome work is actually perfect, I use photoshop for my work though, but I can't get good chrome effects, my chrome tends to look very basic.

Yours looks good! I have fought for years to think of it not so much as chrome, but as a reflection of the environment around it... start with a lot of white, then add whatever logically would reflect... but slightly muted in color.... hope that helps?

Thanks! The first-gen Monte is a favorite of mine (...and I have a soft spot for second-gen as well--- someday I'll finish up a concept I have been slowly working on for that as well!)

Lovin it i used to own one but got rid of it quickly damn rust bucket.LOL

How do you do you backgrounds they look like it took the same amount of time to render the car.Is it a set template that you made/ use all the time or just designed on the fly?

The backgrounds are a combination of textures that I've digitized, and random shapes, etc... I combine everything in differrent ways, depending on the piece.

I owned one over ten years ago, and loved the thing to death... it was era-perfect foir the early '70's, with appliance mag on bias-ply tires (which smoke 'till the cows come home), and even the factory AM radio...
Thanks for checking it out!

I love subtle stuff but I think I became more brutal when I started working for Hot Wheels, lol. But on the other hand I am not to crazy on my Pontiac. I want things to look as if it was factory. I with ya on that one.

Nice style to this Monte, had a good friend that had a 72 in high school. What a monster of a car! just absolutely huge! Fun car tho. I don't know if I like the wheel choice, but to each their own..- Mike

Thanks! The wheel;s were the client's choice, no if's and's or but's... I offered a few different choices, but agree with their thinking, and when you see what we're doing with the wheels, I think you might like them a bit more... I do.
Wheels are always a hit/miss thing... amazing how they can change the overall personality of a car!

Make sure you post the car when the project is done! I understand what you're saying about the wheels and seeing it in real life may change my opinion. The depth of the rear wheel is great, hopefully that transfers over to the actually car. Very cool - Mike

The rear offset will stay... the mini-tubs out back will ensure that aspect!
I'll post some pics as the build gets underway!

Its a Monte Carlo and I love Monte Carlo's or El Camino's. They give that killer Cholo look with out using Daytons, hydraulics or Impalas. Just ride it low and slow...
